Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Tuesday expressed distress over the recent kidnapping of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.   Makinde noted that this is not the time to cast blames on the governor of the state or President Bola Tinubu, stressing that Nigerians should unite in the fight against insecurity.   The governor spoke during a peaceful protest led by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, the Trade Union Congress, TUC, and the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, at the his office in Ibadan. “I have had the opportunity to engage with the leadership of NANS, NUT and NLC. Let me say this clearly: this is a time of national distress. It is not the time to trade blame or play politics. I am personally distressed.   “We are not dealing with normal human beings. Just think briefly: how will somebody take a fellow human being and slaughter him? Is that somebody normal? So, these are not normal people. I can only appeal to you, the students, the workers and the teachers, to please have trust in your government. We are doing our best.” “This is a time of national distress. It is not the time to trade blames. It is not the time to play politics. I am personally distressed. My own father was a primary school teacher. He actually taught at Awole Dada, less than 15 kilometres away from where this incident happened. My father was there in 1959 and 1960. If something like this had happened to him, maybe I wouldn’t even have been born,” he said.   The governor insisted that the tragedy should not become a platform for political finger-pointing, stressing that the challenge of insecurity requires a united response.   “This is not the time for us to say it is the President that should have handled this, or it is the Governor, or the local government. This is a time to pull together as one,” he said.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has designated Sunday, June 14, 2026, as a nationwide “Black Sunday” in honour of victims of terrorist attacks and other forms of violence across the country.   The association also announced a three-day national prayer programme scheduled to run from June 12 to June 14.   Speaking after the National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, stressed that prayers alone would not resolve Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.   He said urgent and practical measures are needed to address the crisis and restore safety across the nation.   Okoh called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity, describing the situation as critical and requiring immediate intervention.   He also advocated the speedy establishment of state police and the decentralisation of the country’s security architecture to enable faster and more effective responses to threats.   The CAN president further demanded the unconditional release of all kidnapped victims and urged authorities to ensure justice for those affected by insecurity.   Details later…

  Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday assured protesting teachers and civil society organisations in Abuja that security agencies are intensifying efforts to secure the release of abducted teachers and students, while cautioning against the politicisation of security challenges.   Addressing demonstrators who staged a protest in front at the Federal Capital Territory Adminstration (FCTA) Secretariat demanding the immediate rescue of victims of recent school kidnappings, Wike said the Federal Government remained committed to ensuring the safe return of those in captivity.   According to him, security agencies are actively working to rescue the victims and restore confidence in the country’s security architecture.   “We are all concerned about this security situation. The government is on its toes to ensure that those who are kidnapped are rescued,” he said.   The minister expressed confidence in the capacity of the nation’s security institutions to secure the release of the abducted teachers and students, stressing the need for prompt action.   “I have that confidence that the security system will do all they can to make sure the teachers and the students that are being kidnapped are rescued, and let it be prompt,” he added.   Wike, however, warned against turning security concerns into political issues, arguing that insecurity affects all parts of the country and should be approached as a collective national challenge.   He noted that incidents of teacher abductions had occurred in other states without attracting similar protests in the nation’s capital, urging citizens to adopt a more unified response to security threats.   “We are all concerned, but let us not politicise issues. That is what I will not support. We are all concerned about the security situation and how the teachers and students should be released,” he said.   The minister further disclosed that security agencies were operating within established protocols and had made significant progress in efforts to secure the victims’ freedom.   According to him, no responsible government would deliberately allow its citizens to remain vulnerable to criminal elements, adding that authorities were working under challenging circumstances to protect lives and property.   “There is no government that will deliberately say let citizens be kidnapped, but we know where we found ourselves and we know that everything possible is being done,” he stated.   Calling for national solidarity, Wike said insecurity should not be viewed through regional or political lenses, stressing that an attack on one community ultimately affects the entire country.   “What concerns you concerns everybody, and what concerns Abuja also concerns everybody. We are all looking at how people should rise up with the same dedication,” he said.   The protest followed growing public concern over recent school abductions in parts of the country, with teachers’ groups and civil society organisations calling on authorities to strengthen security around schools and ensure the safe return of victims.

 President Bola Tinubu has returned to Abuja, the nation’s capital city, after his Sallah break.   The president touched down at the  Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday in Abuja, where he was received by key government officials.   Among the government officials who received him were his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.   During Tinubu’s time in Lagos, he combined traditional Sallah festivities with official engagements, which included receiving political allies, hosting investors, and reviewing infrastructure projects.   While in Lagos, Tinubu commissioned three warships and a regional anti-piracy force of the Nigerian Navy during the International Fleet Review and International Maritime Exercise held to mark the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary.   At the event, the president said the acquisition of the vessels underscored the government’s determination to enhance maritime security, protect national assets, and support economic growth.

Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has strongly criticised the defection of House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as “organised crime.” Odinkalu made the remark in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, following Speaker Tajudeen Abbas’ announcement of Chinda’s defection during plenary.      The Speaker read a letter notifying the House of Chinda’s move to the APC. However, the letter was dated April 23, 2026, raising questions about the timing and process. Chinda subsequently resigned as Minority Leader.    Odinkalu highlighted that Chinda had already been selected as the APC governorship candidate for Rivers State in the 2027 election while still serving as Minority Leader of the PDP in the House.    In his post, Odinkalu wrote: “Today, the speaker of @HouseNGR has announced the defection of my good friend, @OKChinda, from @OfficialPDPNig to @OfficialAPCNg. It is claimed he also now ceases to be #MinorityLeader of the House. They back-dated the letter of notification to 23 April.”      “Last month, while still the Minority Leader of the House, Chinda was selected to be the candidate of the ruling @OfficialAPCNg for governorship of Rivers State in #NigeriaDecides2027,” he added.      Odinkalu expressed scepticism about potential judicial validation of the move, stating: “I am sure they have lined up their #FullyOwned judges to make this look kosher with a suitable court order. But no amount of #CourtWashing can clean this up. It is #OrganizedCrime. Period!”    The defection has sparked controversy, with reports indicating that Chinda is facing a lawsuit alleging that the process did not comply with due process and relevant constitutional provisions.    The House of Representatives is expected to elect a new Minority Leader following Chinda’s resignation.     

President Bola Tinubu has praised the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) Real Estate Investment Fund (MREIF) for successfully delivering N128 billion in affordable mortgages to 1,859 families across 25 states in Nigeria. The President described the milestone as a clear demonstration that well-designed policies can significantly expand home ownership opportunities for millions of Nigerians previously excluded from the housing market.       In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu highlighted that the beneficiaries spread across all six geopolitical zones secured mortgages with favourable terms: up to 20-year tenors, a fixed interest rate of 9.75% per annum, and a minimum equity contribution of just 10%.  These conditions, he noted, had been largely unavailable in Nigeria for nearly six decades.       “For years, many Nigerians could afford monthly rent but could not access the type of financing required to purchase a home,” Tinubu said.  “That reality kept countless families out of home ownership and limited their ability to build lasting assets.” He added that the progress by MREIF proves that “with the right policies, strong institutions and effective partnerships, we can expand access to home ownership and create opportunities for more Nigerians to build wealth through asset ownership.”       Beyond the mortgages, the initiative has unlocked N221 billion in total property value and supported the delivery of 475 housing units through off-take guarantees.  The average beneficiary is 42 years old, reflecting strong demand among working-age Nigerians.       MREIF is a N1 trillion housing finance platform, with its pilot phase backed by N250 billion in concessionary and commercial funding.  It is sponsored by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated and managed by ARM Investment Managers. The fund’s Series 2 commercial issuance has received top ratings of AAA from Agusto & Co. and AA from GCR Ratings.      The President noted that MREIF complements other government interventions, such as the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme and Family Homes Funds Limited, as part of a broader strategy to transform Nigeria’s housing sector.          

 The house of representatives has asked the federal government to rescue the abducted Ogbomoso schoolchildren and tutors “without further delay”.   The lower legislative chamber passed the resolution during plenary on Tuesday, following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, lawmaker representing Ogbomoso north/ Ogbomoso south/Oriire federal constituency of Oyo state.   The victims were kidnapped on May 15 after gunmen attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and LA Primary School in Ogbomoso, all located in Oriire LGA.   At least 45 schoolchildren and teachers were abducted during the attack.     On Monday, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) commenced strike in the state, calling on the government to take urgent steps to rescue the abducted teachers and schoolchildren.   Last week, President Bola Tinubu directed the deployment of “a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities” to secure the release of the kidnapped pupils and tutors.   Moving the motion, Alao-Akala condemned the killing of Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher, by the abductors.     The lawmaker described the teacher’s beheading as a “barbaric and savage act”, saying it warrants an “immediate and decisive response from every arm of government”.   “As we sit in the comfort of this chamber, mothers in Oriire are sleepless, fathers are broken, and children still in the hands of their captors are crying out for a rescue that has not yet come, and that every passing hour of their captivity is an hour of unbearable agony for families who do not know whether their loved ones are alive or dead,” he said.   Bamidele Salam, lawmaker representing Ede north/Ede south/Ejigbo/Egbedore federal constituency of Osun state, decried the spike in insecurity, especially in public schools.   “The abduction of school children, which started with the kidnapping of Chibok girls a few years ago, is becoming a trend. One of the keys to liberating a people is education, and if that key is in the hands of killers, then there is a problem,” he said.     “As leaders, we need to attend to this issue with a sense of urgency. Most of the children of the leaders attend private schools, some of them outside the country.   “The children of the poor attend public schools, but we cannot close our eyes to the plight of the children of the poor,” he said.   He asked the government to create a special force to protect schools nationwide.   Benedict Etanabene, a lawmaker from Delta, urged the parliament to conclude the constitutional process of establishing state police.     The motion was unanimously adopted after Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house, called for a voice vote.   Consequently, the parliament asked the federal government to establish a permanent military base in the area to tackle the activities of banditry across the Oyo national park and its environs.

 Enoch Adeboye, general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has implored Nigeria’s security chiefs to eliminate terrorists within 90 days or step down.   In a recent video posted on the church’s X handle on Tuesday, Adeboye urged the federal government to act swiftly in addressing the country’s security challenges.   “If I were asked to make suggestions, I would say quietly to our government, move fast. And tell our security chiefs, get rid of these terrorists within 90 days, or resign,” Adeboye said.   The cleric noted that religious leaders can only offer advice to political authorities, and that the final responsibility rests with the commander-in-chief.     Adeboye said he advised late President Muhammadu Buhari who gave security chiefs a similar deadline to tackle Boko Haram, but that the directive was not fully achieved within the timeframe.   In 2021, Buhari ordered the then service chiefs to “take out” bandits, kidnappers, and their sponsors.   The late president said the armed forces should be more proactive rather than reactionary.     Adeboye said the former president acted on the advice by issuing the directive to security chiefs, but failed to enforce it after the deadline elapsed.   “He ran with that advice, but he didn’t follow it through. Because he gave the order as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.The three months went, and the work was not done,” he said.   The RCCG general overseer said he later questioned the former president over his decision not to act after the deadline passed, but declined to give details of their conversations.   He called on the current government to ensure that any directive given to security chiefs goes beyond neutralising terrorists to also targeting those who finance and support them.     “When giving orders to the service chiefs this time around, we should make it clear to them that they are not only to eliminate the terrorists, they should eliminate their sponsors, no matter how influential they may be,” Adeboye added.   His comments come amid renewed concerns over insecurity across the country, following a series of kidnappings, attacks on communities and abductions of students in recent months.   On May 15, some gunmen attacked two schools in Ogbomoso, Oyo state abducting dozens of pupils and teachers. One of the teacher would later be beheaded in a viral video circulating online.   Following the abduction, President Bola Tinubu directed the deployment of a “specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities” to intensify efforts to secure the release pupils and teachers.     The abduction adds to a string of similar incidents recorded across the country in recent months.
